We cannot outrun them,
Times of darkness always come.
Whoever teaches us that it’s possible
To live always in the light, lies:
Where there is light, shadows fall.
Where there is day, night follows.
Uncertainty, upheaval, confusion,
Turmoil,decline, death, loss,
Fear, longing, pain:
These are not signs of failure.
They are signs of life unfolding.
What we run from
Grows its power over us.
What we risk to welcome,
What we risk to embrace.
What we risk to explore,
Empowers us and brings us knowing.
There is only the practice
Of learning to hold ourselves more safely
In the middle of its cycles.
Staying with darkness when it comes,
Our eye adjusts.
We can discover radiance within the dark.
We can grow new ways of seeing.
We can find new, more solid ground.
